Speed Secrets by Ross Bentley
1. The seat is crucial. 2. The less done with the controls, the less chance something will go wrong. 3. The slower the driver's movements, the faster the car is able to go. 4. Squeeze the brakes on, and ease off them. Smoothness is crucial. 5. Feed in the throttle gently but quickly. 6. The lower the steering angle, the faster the speed. 7. Shifts should be gentle. 8. Downshifts should be perfectly smooth. 9. You should never be able to feel the brake-throttle transition. 10. Learn when to go fast. 11. Set up an off-camber corner so you're off-camber for as short as possible. 12. A good driver learns from his mistakes. 13. If you enter a corner too fast, ease off the brakes slightly and aim for an early apex. 14. Look for and drive the grippiest pavement in the rain. 15. A later, sharper turn-in and later apex are prerequisite in the rain. 16. In the rain, the car should be sliding almost all the time. (Track) 17. If the car feels like it's on rails, you're driving too slowly. 18. Visually drive the track. 19. Be calm, relaxed, and focused. Forget everything else. 20. Focus your eyes on where you want to go. 21. Look and think as far ahead as possible. Keep your head upright! 22. Work on seeing and being aware at all times. 23. Relax and let your car and your body "flow." 24. If you find your mind wandering, talk yourself around the track. 25. Decide on two or three corners/things that will make you faster. 26. Don't fight the car, if that's what it takes to make it drive the ideal line. 27. Act like a pro race driver if you want to be a pro race driver. 28. It all comes down to balancing the car. 29. The farther ahead you look, the more sensitive you will be to slight changes in direction or sliding. 30. If you can't over-drive a car, you'll never be able to drive the limit consistently. That does not condone spinning or crashing! 31. To overdrive: enter each corner at a speed slightly above what you think is the limit, then make the necessary corrections to balance the car. Do not forget to drive the perfect ideal line. 32. The more your technique is programmed, the easier, smoother, and more natural it will be in the heat of battle on the track.
I live for these rules. Smoothness is my number one rule.
